Sportmanship

Message to all Soccer Parents

Welcome to all new and returning players! Sportsmanship is a key issue in every sport and at every age. It can be defined as conduct and attitude considered as befitting participants in sports, especially fair play, courtesy, and grace in losing.

With that in mind, I ask that you keep the following guidelines in mind for this and every season:

  1. Cheer for your team, not against the opposition.
  2. Keep your comments clean and positive, no profanity.
  3. Make sure your child comes prepared with the appropriate equipment.
  4. Let the coaches’ coach - do not try to coach your child while they are on the field. You may be giving them conflicting instruction, which puts undue pressure on your child.
  5. Honor all of the referee’s calls, accept their decisions (whether you agree or not) and always treat them with respect. Arguing with them will not change their minds.  On the field, referees are given the ultimate authority.
  6. Accept all guidance from your coach or appointed team official as to where you are or are not allowed to sit.  Each league has specific guidelines that you are supposed to follow.  Your coach should be aware of those guidelines and give you appropriate direction.

Please remember that your child’s coach is a VOLUNTEER and has chosen to coach because of a love of the game as well as a love for your children and in some instances so the children have a team available to play on. It is important for everyone to understand that each coach is ultimately held responsible not only for their own behavior but the behavior of each of their players, parents and spectators. This means that a coach can be disciplined or even ejected from a game for the inappropriate behavior of others.

I ask that you please give the coaches your complete respect and cooperation at the games and practices. They need to spend their time with your children, not answering questions about strategy, playing time or other incidentals. You should each be provided with information on how to contact your coach either by e-mail or by telephone. Each of them is open to discuss whatever your concerns, however, please address the issue with them privately, not on game day or practice days, respectfully and not within earshot of your child or any other players. In addition, you are all always welcome to contact me and I will be happy to answer any of your questions and address any of your concerns.

Thank you all for your cooperation and support.  I hope you all have a great season!
