Swim Meet 101
Davidsonville Gators Swim Team
What To Expect During the Meet
First swim meets can be confusing. Here are some things to expect.
Before the Meet
- Review Heat Sheet – The heat sheet (or Meet Program) containing each swimmer entered in the meet will be posted on the “Programs & Results” tab on DST website 1-2 days prior to the meet. An email will be sent as soon as it is available. The heat sheet will outline the individual events and relays each swimmer is participating in. Paper copies of the heat sheet are not available at the meet, so please either save the file to your phone or print it out prior to arriving at the meet.
- Confirm Arrival Time – An email will be sent prior to the meet with information about when to arrive, when warm ups will be held, and when the meet will start. Please give yourself plenty of time to park and get settled in the team area upon arrival.
- Participate in Warm Ups –The warm-up start time will be included in the email that you receive a few days in advance of the swim meet. If the meet is at home, DST will typically warm-up first (requiring an earlier warm-up start time) and DST will warm-up second at an away meet. Warm-up times may vary for each meet. Warm-ups are important for the swimmer and for team spirit and therefore are not optional. After warm-ups, it’s important to stay in the team area so your swimmer attends the team meeting prior to the start of the meet. This is the time when coaches provide last minute instructions and lead swimmers in the DST team cheer.
During the Meet
- Monitor Event Progress – The meet is organized into events. Each event has a boys event and then a girls event for a given stroke and distance. The order and description of events can be found below. It is important to track event progress and ensure your swimmer(s) are at the Clerk of Course for line up at least three events in advance.
- Stay Hydrated – Summer swim meets can get hot! Make sure your swimmer(s) stay hydrated and sit in the shade whenever possible.
- Cheer for teammates – Show your DST spirit by cheering for other swimmers and swim buddies! Encourage your swimmer to stay to the end of the meet to support the older swimmers in their events and also the freestyle relay events.
After the Meet
- Help Clean Up – Please stay and help clean up garbage, towels, and any personal items following the meet.
Order of Events
DST swimmers are eligible to enter up to four scoring events at each dual meet, in any combination of individual or relay events. Individual events include Freestyle, Breaststroke, Butterfly, Backstroke and Individual Medleys (IMs). Relay Events include Medley Relays and Freestyle Relays. Some possible combinations include:
- Three individual strokes and one relay
- Two individual strokes, one individual medley (IM), and one relay
- Two individual strokes and two relays
Note, entries in non-scoring Exhibition Relays (for example, “B” or “C” Medley or Freestyle relay events) do not count toward the four entry maximum.
